The only thing better than an afternoon concert is a free afternoon concert. Indie rock aviators the Wrens are set to play at Georgetown’s Bulldog Alley this Saturday at 2:30 p.m. before heading down to the Black Cat to play a show at a more conventional time—9:30 p.m.
In 2003, the New Jersey-based band made one of the most successful comebacks in the history of independent music by releasing The Meadowlands, an affecting masterpiece that combines high-energy rock with bittersweet themes of love and loss.
The release of the album marked the end of a seven-year hiatus for The Wrens, a gap that stemmed largely from financial issues with the band’s original label, Wind-Up Records. During that period, the band matured greatly, as the music on their latest effort shows. Eschewing the in-your-face angst pop of Secaucus, the songs on The Meadowlands are sprawling works employing complex guitar work and introspective lyrics. Three years later, the band is still on tour in support of the record.
Doors open at 1:00 pm
Bulldog Alley is located in Hoya Court. The Black Cat is located at 1811 14th St. NW.
