Finally: a Sunday bus

November 2, 2006

Georgetown will offer Sunday bus service to Dupont for the first time next weekend, thanks to the efforts of the Student Association.

Abe’s Transportation, the same contractor that runs the SafeRides shuttles, will run the buses.

The Saturday buses, termed the “Night Owl,” will run every half hour from 6 p.m. to 12 a.m; while the Sunday buses, the “Early Bird,” will run every half hour from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m.

“So I’ll be like, ‘What are you doing?’ ‘I’m taking the Night Owl,’” Murchison said. “It’s something that’s easy to remember.”

Murchison negotiated the contract with the assistance of Vice President for Safety and Security Dave Morrell.

The program will be funded with money from the Student Activities Commission’s alumni donation fund. $20, 00 a year will be allocated for the next three years.

“We felt like the bus situation was a need on campus that needed to be addressed,” Student Activities Commission Chair Lorraine Riley (COL ’08) said.

The new bus service plan was negotiated after a proposal for increased GUTS bus service that the Student Association drew up over the summer was rejected by the Department of Housing and Facilities.

“It’s very important that students use this, because this has been a perennial campaign issue,” Murchison said. “Use it or lose it.”
