Mazel Tov: Jewish Filmfest

December 7, 2006

Still feeling guilty about seeing Borat? Counting down the days until you can bust out the menorah? Do you just want to stick it to Mel Gibson? For all those who wish Hanukkah could start just a little bit sooner, the Washington D.C. Jewish Community Center is presenting the 17th Annual Washington Jewish Film Festival, which runs through Dec. 10. The festival features a number of shorts, documentaries and feature films portraying the spectrum of the Jewish experience.

Some highlights include Close to Home, which focuses on the military service of two Israeli women (Saturday, Dec. 9 at 7:45 p.m. at the Aaron & Cecile Goldman Theater), 51 Birch Street (Sunday Dec. 10 at 2:15 p.m. at the Avalon), the story of an American filmmaker and his eccentric family, and Wide Awake, a Sundance-approved documentary about one man’s hilarious struggle with insomnia (Saturday, Dec. 9 at 9:45 p.m. at the Aaron & Cecile Goldman Theater). A complete list of films, show times, and locations can be found at www.wjff.org. Student tickets are nine dollars and can be purchased through the festival’s web site or by phone at (800) 494-8497 until 10 a.m. on the day of the show.
