Georgetown baseball, riding a thrilling 3-2 extra-inning victory in this weekend’s game against the University of Pennsylvania, headed home on Wednesday to battle Mount St. Mary’s. The Hoya’s young pitching staff flexed their muscles once again, leading Georgetown to a hard-fought 3-1 win.
Freshman right-hander Tim Adleman gave the Hoyas another outstanding pitching performance, throwing six and a third innings and giving up only one run while striking out eight batters.
Georgetown faced an early challenge in the top of the second inning when Mount St. Mary’s third baseman Matt Eiden drove in a run on a fielder’s choice. The Hoyas responded quickly, tying the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the inning with an RBI double by senior center-fielder Mark McLaughlin. McLaughlin’s bat got him a Big East honor-roll mention last week, and his solid hitting continued. Adleman, joined later by freshman pitcher Jack Bender and junior pitcher Daniel Kennedy, settled down and threw seven scoreless innings from that point on.
Georgetown got the go-ahead run in the bottom of the third when Senior Brandon Davis connected on an offering from Mount St Mary’s Andrew Germuth, driving in junior infielder Matthew Bouchard on a double down the left field line.
It was smooth sailing for the Hoyas until the top of the ninth when, with a man on and only one out, Mount St. Mary’s second baseman hit a frozen rope up the middle. But Bouchard saved the day with a brilliant diving grab to his right to end the inning.
With the victory, the Hoyas improved to 9-11. Georgetown is a solid 4-1 on its home field, but the team will travel away from the comforts of Shirley Povich Field Friday as they open up Big East Conference play in New Brunswick, NJ against Rutgers.
