Baseball takes step back

March 29, 2007

After Georgetown Baseball was swept in a disappointing Big East opening series versus Rutgers, the team rebounded Tuesday, edging rival George Washington 5-4 at home. The win avenged a 17-9 blowout loss earlier in the season and had all the signs of being a major boost for the team, but Georgetown faced a setback the next day, falling to the University of Maryland-Baltimore County 9-2.

UMBC entered the game with an abysmal 5-11 record, while Georgetown was riding the tails of a three-game winning streak at home.

Freshman right-hander Tim Adleman seemed destined to continue that home-field success in his first 3 innings of work, allowing no hits and no walks.

His success, however, came to a halt in the top of the fourth inning, when UMBC junior third baseman Steve Russo tripled to center, knocking in two runs. Adleman, shaken at this point, gave up two more earned runs in the next two innings. He was pulled in favor of freshman Cary Piligian in the sixth inning.

Although Piligian gave up a hit, a walk and a wild pitch, it was the Hoya defense that let the game spiral out of control. With the game still in reach in the seventh, freshman second baseman Tom Elliott’s second error of the game allowed UMBC to move runners in scoring position yet again. The Retrievers would score three runs in the inning, shutting the door on Georgetown. The Hoya offense stranded eight runners during the course of the game.

The Hoya defense will look to tighten up at 3:00 p.m. on Friday when they take on Big East opponent Cincinnati at Shirley Povich Field.
