Senior Day gave the Hoyas more than just the seniors to celebrate. The Georgetown women’s softball team swept Coppin State on Tuesday. The lone senior on the team, Cathy Richter, fittingly hit her second homerun of the season in the first game, to help the Hoyas to a 17-0 victory. The Hoyas took the second game 19-0. Both games ended in five-inning mercy decisions.
“All season we have told our players that they need to compete against the game and not worry about the opponent,” head coach Pat Conlan said. “I think we did an excellent job with staying focused on the things we needed to accomplish.”
The Hoyas were strong from the start. On the defensive end, they retired the Golden Eagles in order in the first inning. This defensive stand was followed by an eight run effort in the bottom half of the inning. Throughout the game the Hoyas steadily racked up the runs, and Coppin State was unable to get anything started.
Freshman pitcher Jennifer Connell pitched a complete game and gave up only three hits. She struck out eight batters to record her ninth win of the season.
“We hit the ball well, played excellent defense and pitched well,” Conlan said. “Regardless of who your opponent is, those are the things that you need to have in place in order to be successful.”
The second game began in much the same way, as Georgetown jumped off to a 9-0 first-inning lead. The Hoyas brought in three more runs before the fourth inning, and pocketed seven more before the fifth-inning decision.
The Golden Eagles found the Hoyas defense impenetrable. Coppin State managed to get only one hit off of freshman pitcher Sarah Kamenski, who struck out 10 of the Golden Eagles’ batters for a career high.
“It was a great confidence boost for us as we go play Mount St. Mary’s on Thursday. We have 12 wins and I believe we are playing well enough to add a few more to that total.”
The Hoyas (12-37) travel to Emmitsburg, Md., on Thursday to face off against Mount St. Mary’s.
