YouTopia: World’s greatest freaks and geeks

October 11, 2007

World records tend to fall within three categories: impressive physical feats, biological abnormalities and arbitrary spectacle. While the majority of these achievements seem legitimate, some of the more random records negate being “the best” versus being “the only.” Sure, more people can make records this way, but often times the results become laughable. Here’s a taste of some of the more bizarre records featured on YouTube.

World’s Farthest Trampoline Slam Dunk

Amidst the repetitive editing, Japanese announcer and ridiculous 90 degree “jump,” this video becomes limitlessly entertaining. Take note of the serious, anticipatory faces and over-the-top celebration, much less the man that flies 16 meters across the screen to blow your mind. The moral: if you can’t actually dunk, resort to a trampoline.

If beauty really is skin deep, this guy puts Fabio to shame.

World’s Largest “Domino Effect”

Perhaps an afternoon of playing with dominoes is fun. Maybe listening to music makes you happy. However, does this justify constructing a million-piece, music-themed domino effect? Your jaw will drop watching this video, but mostly because you know someone has to clean up afterwards. Alone.

1,683 guitar players play “Smoke on the Water” simultaneously

On June 3rd 2007, a Kansas City classic rock station sponsored this unparalleled tribute to Deep Purple. These guitarists shred their way into the record books whilst ignoring the stupidity of what boils down to a publicity stunt. Just goes to show that if 1,683 people can play “Smoke on the Water” at the same time, you can probably find something to do in Kansas City, too.

Super Mario 3 beaten in 11 minutes

Think of it as Super Mario 3 spark notes. Utilizing a combination of ballsy maneuvers and little-known game secrets, this player accomplishes the unthinkable just in time to go outside. If only everyone had such impressive hand-eye coordination. Then we could all learn to twist the doorknob and pull at the same time.

Best of the “Guinness Book of World Records” television show

Highlights: a man breaking watermelons with his head, a human shot put, the world’s strongest beard and shame.
