Chilling Halloween Highballs

October 25, 2007

So you’re throwing a Halloween party? Try some of these bloodcurdling cocktails for a killer bar selection—the usual Natty Light, Burnett’s and jungle juice trifecta is getting old anyway.

If you’re interested in a kiss from a vampire this Halloween, try the Dracula’s Kiss, straight from the Count’s lips to yours. Coat the bottom of a highball glass with grenadine, then add ice and 1 oz. of cherry vodka. Fill to your liking with cola and add some maraschino cherries for garnish. The red and black layering of this drink is eerily reminiscent of that infamous Transylvanian castle.

For a more sophisticated (or pretentious) drinker who wants to keep with the black color scheme, give the Black Martini a taste. Start by shaking 3 1?2 oz. of vodka with 1?2 oz. of blackberry brandy or black raspberry liquer. Strain into a chilled glass and top with a black olive.

The Devil’s Punch is great for the whole party to enjoy. You’ll need tequila, orange liquer, limoncello, sour mix and orange juice, so make sure you plan ahead for your ingredients. Mix 2 parts tequila, 1 part orange liquer, 1 part limoncello and 1 part sour mix into a punch bowl and stir well. Finish with a generous dash of orange juice.

Despite the appearance of pieces of unknown green creatures lurking beneath its shadowy depths, the Witch’s Brew is a surefire Halloween hit. Throw a cup of ice in the blender along with 2 oz. of vodka, 4 oz. of cranberry juice and 2 lime wheels. Blend the ingredients for 3-5 seconds, taking care not to fully chop up the lime wheels. Pour the murky concoction into a hurricane glass and serve with a black umbrella.

No Halloween shindig is complete without a ghost-themed drink, so give the Ghostbuster a try this year. Start off by shaking 1 oz. of peach Schnapps with 1 oz. of melon liquer. Strain the mixture into a chilled highball glass and add 3-5 drops of Bailey’s Irish Cream into the center of the drink—the Irish cream will create a ghostlike figure in the middle of the glass.

You’ll be the most popular host on campus this Halloween with your festive bar selection. Flip cup and beer pong can take a temporary backseat to these macabre cocktails as you get your drink on in Halloween fashion.
