Before anyone knew what a Hoya was, Lil’ Wayne was rocking a navy blue Georgetown fitted in his video, “Stunting Like My Daddy.” These days everyone in music is talking about the Hoyas. Common, Jay-Z and Lil’ Wayne all have tracks that pay tribute to our superstars. The following songs’ heavy baselines and lyrics are guaranteed to get you pumped-up while drinking at 10 a.m. before the game (as if you needed any help). They will also keep you going as you rush to the Verizon Center two hours early hoping to sit in the lower student section. Bump these tracks while you read the Voice’s basketball issue so you’ll know the words by game time this Saturday.
1. Lil’ Wayne, “Upgrade Me”
I’m a dog. I’m a Hoya homie. I’m a boss. Your man is just an employee mommy.
Lil’ Wayne loves Georgetown. From the Georgetown fitted to the occasional Hoya reference in his freeflow it’s clear that Weezy F Baby is one of Georgetown’s biggest fans. Maybe if he had made it to Midnight Madness this year he would know that a Hoya is, in fact, not a dog. But we’ll let this one slide.
2. Jay-Z, “The Prelude”
Before the answer was a three, I was downtown with a Hoya chick, lawyer chick.
Jay-Z raps confidently on this track touting how long he has been the best. And since he drops the Georgetown reference in the midst of these boasts, we can assume he means that we’re the best, too. By alluding to about one of our most famous players (Allen “The Answer” Iverson) and dropping our name, Jay-Z proves he’s a Hoya fan.
3. Common, “Southside”
Still rock the Prada ‘fore that, rock the Starter, niggas out in Georgetown and Magic way harder.
While the context in which he name-drops Georgetown is tough to decipher, the fact of the matter is that we’re mentioned in the same sentence as Prada, called “one of the most influential clothing designers in the fashion industry” on Wikipedia. So basically, Common is equating Georgetown with fine clothing. We’re cool with that.
4. Outkast, “Rosa Parks”
Bulldoggin’ hoes like them Georgetown Hoyas.
While they have their fair share of groupies off the court, these men know how to treat a lady. The only bulldoggin’ you’ll see from them is on the court.
5. Baby, “Looks Like a Job 4”
Looks like a looks like a job job job for job for Bird man.
