Closing the gap from last year’s 100-point loss, the Georgetown men’s swim team fell to Villanova by a score of 140-100 last Saturday. Although the men won only four of the 13 events, several individual performances caught Head Coach Steven Cartwright’s eye. Despite their winless record, Cartwright is convinced that the team is not in a slump.
“[The meet] was absolutely satisfying,” he said. “We had swimmers swim faster times this weekend than they did two weeks ago when they were fully rested and we still had swimmers qualify for the postseason.”
Freshman Thomas Graham took home both an individual title in the 200-yard breaststroke and a relay title in the 400-yard medley relay. Graham edged out Justin Stephens of Villanova by four one-hundredths of a second in the breaststroke, while his relay team finished six seconds ahead of Villanova’s. Graham’s teammate, sophomore Wes Going, also took first place in two events, winning the 200-yard backstroke in addition to the relay.
Though the team will not compete again until the new year, the Hoyas will use the break to train in hopes of capturing their first win in two years.
“We come into a heavy time right now with finals,” Cartwright said. “During that time it will be more training than anything. We have time now to focus on race strategies and techniques.”
The team will head to Puerto Rico for its annual training trip over winter break and will return to competition on January 18th, against American University.
