Make no mistakes; Brendan Cannon is a consistent offensive powerhouse for the preseason fourth-ranked Georgetown men’s lacrosse team. Last year he led the team in goals, assists and points, and the coaches of the East Coast Athletic Conference voted him the favorite to win the conference’s Offensive Player of the Year award.
Last season, eventual national champions Johns Hopkins bounced the Hoyas in the quarterfinals of the NCAA playoffs, their sixth straight quarterfinal loss. Cannon will be key to the team avoiding the same fate this year.
“We watched that Johns Hopkins team on film and Coach made a good game plan,” Cannon commented. “We just did not execute.”
In two weeks, the 2008 season will kick off and Cannon hopes that this year Georgetown will finally earn a long-sought national title.
“Preparation as a team is the right thing to do to refocus for a championship,” Cannon said. “We need to buy into the coaches and their training.”
The lacrosse season is relentlessly packed with steep competition, including Duke, Navy and Penn State. Cannon’s senior season will begin against Potomac region rival Maryland on the Multi-Sport Field on February 23 at noon.
