Georgetown baseball snapped a four-game losing streak yesterday afternoon, continuing its streak of success against Navy with a 6-2 win. The Hoyas have won only two of their last 10 games, but both of those victories came against the Midshipmen.
The Hoyas suffered their latest setback earlier on Tuesday night at the hands of George Mason—the Patriots extended their winning streak to four games after riding stellar defense to a 6-1 victory over Georgetown.
The Hoyas stranded seven runners on the night. They managed a rally late in the ninth, loading the bases with no men out after senior Matt Iannetta was hit by a pitch and freshman Sean Lamont and senior Matt Harrigan delivered singles. Sophomore Dan Capeless came through with a sacrifice fly to give the Hoyas their lone run, but they couldn’t come any closer.
“I think we just got beaten tonight by a better team,” head coach Pete Wilk said. “Since I’ve been here, [George Mason has] always been a team that can mash and they got two homeruns tonight. They also played solid defense and got a good game out of their pitcher. Any time that happens, it’s probably not going to be your night.”
The Hoyas bounced back yesterday afternoon against their favorite Midshipmen, sweeping the season series. Georgetown’s offensive struggles against George Mason continued against Navy until the sixth inning, when they used two doubles and a single to score three runs and take a 3-2 lead. Georgetown increased their lead with three more runs in the seventh, all with two outs, including a bases-loaded single by freshman Erick Fernandez.
Sophomore Cary Piligian played the role of stopper for the Hoyas, halting a four-game slide and earning his first collegiate win with three innings of one-hit ball.
Georgetown will travel to Cincinnati on Friday to take on the Bearcats.
