Fast Break: Women’s soccer takes on top-ranked Notre Dame

October 9, 2008

After an unexpected weekend off due to the norovirus outbreak on campus, the Georgetown women’s soccer team (8-0-2) spent the week regrouping in preparation for their biggest challenge of the season: the top-ranked Fighting Irish of Notre Dame.

“It’s just unfortunate for us because it comes at a time where it kills any momentum we had,” Georgetown head coach Dave Nolan said.

The team could have used that momentum against the Irish (12-0-0), the only remaining team in the country with neither a loss nor a tie on its record. Notre Dame has scored 42 goals this season while allowing only four. Despite the overwhelming numbers, Nolan believes his own team has done enough thus far to count itself among the elite contenders that can challenge the Irish.

“There are four teams in the top 50 who have not been beaten this year,” he said. “We are one of them, so I think we can go into the game with some confidence and go for the upset.”

The Notre Dame attack, led by senior forward Kerri Hanks, the program’s all-time points leader, has not come close to being stopped all year. Then again, neither have the Hoyas.

Kick-off is set for Friday at 3 p.m. on North Kehoe Field.
