After last Sunday’s 2-1 semi-final loss to the University of Connecticut and subsequent elimination from the Big East tournament, the Georgetown women’s soccer team (13-4-2, 8-4 BE) finds itself in limbo, despite coming off one of its most impressive regular seasons ever.
“If we would have won, we’d have moved up in the RPI [Ratings Percentage Index],” head coach Dave Nolan said. “A win, quite frankly, would have put us in. Now we are at the mercy of the committee.”
Last year, Georgetown defeated the Huskies in the quarterfinals before falling to Notre Dame in the semis. The 2007 squad’s 14-6-0, 7-6 BE record was good enough to earn it a spot in the NCAA Tournament. Now all the Hoyas can do is to wait and see if their regular season numbers will be enough to carry them into the 2008 Tournament.
“We are currently a team under consideration on the big board,” Nolan said. “It really comes down to how the committee views our schedule and our significant wins. This is still a very important week for us, despite the fact we are not playing. We can still see a lot of changes in teams’ RPIs, but we are definitely more on the outside looking in.”
Among those significant wins are shutouts against Rutgers, Louisville, and Cincinnati. The Hoyas’ impressive record against stiff Big East competition could give them an edge, but they are currently ranked 70th in the NCAA RPI behind six other teams in the conference.
The speculation will end on Monday evening when the NCAA committee announces the 64-team field.
