Women hope to repeat

February 19, 2009

2008 Overall Record: 12-7

2009 Preseason Lacrosse Magazine Ranking: 7

Season Outlook: The women’s lacrosse team returns with nine starters from last season and adds a strong freshman class to their already-talented roster. Despite their tough schedule, the Hoyas look to defend their Big East crown and go deep into the NCAA tournament.

Opening Game: This Saturday vs. George Washington

Players to Watch: Everyone

“The unique thing about our team is that we don’t have one player who the student body or fans will love,” assistant coach Erin Hellmond said. “We have an extremely talented group of young women that all bring something special to the game and our team. The student body should focus on the whole team, because on any given day any of the players will amaze you.”

Games to watch: Duke, Syracuse, Maryland, and Northwestern (all ranked in the top 10).

Storyline: “Play hard, play smart, play together!” has become the team’s rallying cry for the 2009 season. Head coach Ricky Fried and Hellmold believe this team can be an unstoppable force in 2009 as long as they play together and execute their game plan throughout the season.

“We need to continue to play as a team, push each other while being supportive, and believe in our philosophy,” Hellmold said.

If the Hoya women’s lacrosse team gels as planned, they will be a force to be reckoned with.
