ANC rebukes Philly P

March 5, 2009

Although the owners of Philadelphia Pizza Co. came to Monday’s meeting of the Georgetown Advisory Neighborhood Committee hoping to get approval for a new fan designed to propel food odors away from their neighbors, they came away with a unanimous resolution of condemnation.

According to ANC Commissioner Ed Solomon, the Committee objected to the restaurant’s loud customers, long hours, and bad odor. Commissioners have received complaints from residents living near the pizzeria on 1211 Potomac Ave.

ANC Commissioners also questioned whether the owner of Philly P had the necessary permits for his business. Restaurants where more than half the customers take out their food must have a special permit.

Philly P owner Matt Kocak said only five percent of his customers take out their food.
“People are coming in, eating, and going because we have special stuff in there,” Kocak said.

ANC Commissioners were skeptical about Kocak’s figures, and the Committee passed a resolution expressing concern that Philly P was “butting heads” with the neighbors.

“We’re putting you on notice,” Commissioner Tom Birch said.
