What Rocks: Victoria Sekely

August 28, 2009

Most freshmen spend their summer before college preparing for school, but few must prepare like Victoria Sekely. The incoming tennis player spent her vacation playing on the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Summer Circuit, where she more than held her own against college opponents.

Playing at Penn State, Sekely advanced to the doubles semifinals and fell in singles to eventual champion Erin Clark of Richmond. She gave Clark her toughest match of the tournament, but Sekely wasn’t fazed by the level of competition.

“She was no different than anybody I’ve played before,” Sekely said.

Sekely’s summer work bodes well for her future as a Hoya.

“Vicky took it upon herself to get out there and let other teams know that Georgetown has players out there competing on a national level in the summertime,” said head coach Gordie Ernst. “That’s very important for the profile of our program.”

Georgetown’s women’s tennis team is looking to leap ahead this year. After finishing without a win in the Big East last season, the Hoyas will look to Sekely to invigorate a young team.

“We have a desperate need for competitors. A lot of kids can play, but we need girls who want to compete,” said Ernst. “And what I saw in Vicky was a competitor, someone who is like, ‘Give me a challenge, I want it.’”

For her part, Sekely said that she’s excited to join the women’s tennis team this year. “I’m excited to build it and bring us stronger and closer together,” Sekely said.
