Georgetown junior linebacker Ty Williams suffered a serious neck injury during the football team’s 20-48 season-opening loss at St. Francis (Pa.) Saturday afternoon.
Williams lied motionless on the field after a first-quarter collision and was immediately transported via ambulance to the Altoona UPMC Hospital, where he underwent a nine-hour surgery Saturday night and is still currently hospitalized.
The University did not the disclose the extent of his injury in a press release Sunday afternoon, but several reports indicate that he may have suffered several broken bones in his neck.
“Ty is one of our leaders on and off of the field and is a very important part of the Hoya Football Family.” Georgetown Head Coach Rob Sgarlata said in a written statement released by the University Sunday afternoon. “He is a tremendous young man. We are hopeful that he will progress and we are keeping and him and his family in our thoughts and constant prayers.”
“Our thoughts and prayers are with Ty Williams and his family,” Georgetown Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Lee Reed said. “The coming days will be very important and we will be here to support him and his family. We ask our fans and the entire Georgetown community to believe and pray for Ty as he begins the recovery process.
“I would also like to thank the athletic department at St. Francis (Pa.) and the medical staff at UPMC Altoona Hospital for their tremendous reaction and support at the game and in the last 24 hours. It has meant quite a bit, both to Georgetown and his family.”
