Following one of the most successful regular seasons in program history, the No. 3 Georgetown men’s soccer team (15-2-2, 9-0 Big East) earned the third overall seed in the NCAA College Cup. This is the fifth time in the past six seasons that the team has earned a tournament berth.
With the third seed, the Blue and Gray are guaranteed home-field advantage through the quarterfinals of the tournament, and will enjoy a first-round bye. The Hoyas will resume play this Saturday, Nov. 22, at 1:00 p.m, when they play the winner of a first-round matchup between Hofstra (13-7, 6-2 CAA) and Lehigh (13-5-3, 4-3-2 Patriot League).
On Sunday, the Hoyas captured their first Big East conference tournament championship by defeating the Creighton Bluejays (17-3, 7-2 Big East) 2-1 in overtime. The win extended the school-record unbeaten streak to 16 games, which includes a stretch of 13-straight victories. Earlier in the season, Georgetown also won the Big East Regular Season Championship.
The Hoyas have been nationally ranked for the entire season. They began the year ranked No. 3, but fell to No. 25 following a slow start. Now, they sit back at No. 3 in the NCAA Coaches Poll, and are ranked No.1 in the most recent TopDrawerSoccer.com poll.
Last season, Georgetown advanced to the quarterfinal round, where they fell to eventual national champion Virginia in penalty kicks. In 2011, the Hoyas reached the national championship game, but lost to Indiana by a score of 1-0. The Blue and Gray are 8-4-3 overall in the NCAA tournament.
