Sports Information

In their home and regular season finale, the Georgetown women’s basketball team (16-12, 9-9 Big East) won their second-straight game Sunday afternoon, as the Hoyas defeated Xavier (17-12, 9-9 Big East) 63-51 at McDonough Arena.

Sports Information

Sophomore guard Dorothy Adomako and freshman guard Dionna White each had double-double efforts for the Hoyas, who clinched the No. 5 seed and a crucial first-round bye in next week’s Big East Tournament in Chicago.

Adomako finished with 20 points off 8-of-14 shooting and tied a season-high with 10 rebounds, while White scored 14 points, tied a season-high rebounding effort with 11 rebounds, and dished out six assists. Senior forward Logan Battle also added 10 points and eight rebounds for the Hoyas.

An explosive start to the second half by the Hoyas put the game out of reach for Xavier. The Hoyas opened the third quarter on a 15-5 run en route to outscoring the Musketeers 19-12. Despite Xavier’s efforts defensively in switching from a man defense to zone, the Hoyas were able to effectively get the ball inside with 12 points in the paint thanks to penetration created by White and Adomako and the post presence of Battle.

Xavier took control of the game early in the first quarter by taking advantage of six early turnovers by the Hoyas. The Musketeers jumped out to a 16-12 lead and led for the entirety of the period. Georgetown reasserted themselves in the second quarter by cutting down on the turnovers and getting some good looks in the post for both Battle and Vitalis.

The Blue and Gray opened the period on an 8-0 run to take a 20-18 lead, their first of the game. Both teams traded baskets midway through the period before the Hoyas closed the half on a 9-2 run. During the run, Battle scored six consecutive points before senior guard Katie McCormick converted a three-pointer at the buzzer to give the Hoyas a 31-25 halftime lead.

The Hoyas will fly out to Chicago next week for the Big East Tournament, where they will face No. 4 seed St. John’s (20-9, 11-7 Big East). (tgigreek.com) The Red Storm swept the Hoyas in the regular season, winning 65-60 in D.C. on Jan. 15 and 63-55 in Queens on Feb. 14.
