Occupy activists look to revive movement with May Day

As the spring months begin, the Occupy movement faces questions about how to stay relevant since the forced evictions of major camps in D.C. and New York. Members of Occupy Georgetown are similarly grappling with how to create an activist movement on campus. Both Occupy D.C. and Occupy Georgetown hope to build strength by uniting activists from different causes. A May 1 general strike known as “May Day” aims to demonstrate the continuation of the movement.

GU students connect with Cuban youth

This weekend, the Cuban American Student Association (CASA) is partnering with Raíces de Esperanza, a nonprofit that works to empower young Cubans, for the Cuban Youth Summit. As Cuban society becomes increasingly open, the summit aims to foster relationships between young people in Cuba and America.

Graduate applicants increase, contrast national numbers

Despite national downward trends, Georgetown graduate schools increased enrollment by 3.3 percent from 2009 to 2010, rising from 9,059 students to 9,358, according to statistics from the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System. National graduate school enrollment decreased by 1.1 percent during the same period, according to a report from The Chronicle of Higher Education.

SAC commissioners, student leaders discuss changes

On Wednesday night, Student Activities Commission board members and student group leaders came together for a forum to discuss SAC funding guidelines. SAC has drawn heavy criticism in the past for its funding guidelines, which were created in the spring of 2010 at a closed meeting that involved no student group leaders. The meeting was meant to be an opportunity for SAC and student leaders to create a better system for both SAC and student groups.
