Hoyas start off slow

After a disappointing end to last season, the Georgetown women’s volleyball team came to campus ready for a fresh start and a chance to improve. After going 4-10 in conference play down the stretch last season, the Hoyas are still trying to find their way this year, going 1-3 thus far.

If your team failed to win a single game in 2009, most players would have little motivation to compete. But not the Hoya football team. Of course, it is never fun to go 0-11, but the chance to improve in the upcoming season has kept the Georgetown football team focused during the off-months.

The Sports Sermon

Four years ago when David Ortiz was 30 years old, he had one of his greatest seasons ever. His 54 home runs during the 2006 campaign were the most in a single season for the Red Sox. From 2003-2007, there was no hitter more dominant than “Big Papi.” As a die-hard Yankees fan, every time he would step to the plate in a big situation my stomach would drop. When he decided to swing, I’d cringe and hope that he wouldn’t make solid contact and send the ball into the stratosphere.

Backdoor Cuts: Mo’ money, mo’ problems

The NCAA recently released a new slogan for their organization: “Show me the money.” Okay, they didn’t really do that, but they might as well have after having serious talks about expanding the NCAA tournament from 65 to 96 teams. No one from the association’s headquarters has come forward to reveal the reason for the possible expansion, but there can only be one motive: money. Simply put, more games would mean more television and ticket revenue. But would more teams make the tournament better? The answer appears to be a resounding no.

Women end historic season in loss to Baylor

All good things must come to an end. For the women’s basketball team, their unforgettable season came to a close Monday night in Berkley, Calif. in the second round of the NCAA tournament against fourth-seeded Baylor. The Lady Bears defense proved too much for the fifth-seeded Hoyas, who suffered a 49-33 defeat.

Hoyas earn five seed in first NCAA berth since ‘93

In a season full of excitement, the women’s basketball team experienced another thrilling moment on Monday night. This time, though, it was off the court. At the Monday selection show, the Hoyas learned they had received a bid to play in the NCAA Tournament for the first time since the 1992-1993 season. The team has known they would get a spot in the tournament for a while now, due to their impressive resume, but when they found out they were given a five seed and would face 12 seed Marist in Berkley, California on Saturday, they could barely contain their joy.

Backdoor Cuts: Olympic Pride

The Vancouver Olympics marked the 30th anniversary of the “Miracle on Ice” when the United States hockey team upset the Soviet Union juggernaut at the Lake Placid Olympics. 1980 was the last time the U.S. won gold in hockey at the Winter Games. The game is one of the defining moments of 20th century American sports.

Hoyas defeat Irish in front of huge home crowd

As the final buzzer sounded last Saturday, the Georgetown women’s basketball team had just beaten the No. 4 team in the country and recorded the biggest win in program history. The No. 11 Lady Hoyas (23-4, 12-2 Big East) beat the Irish (24-3, 11-3 Big East) 76-66 in front of a record 2,417 people at McDonough Arena. It was their most difficult test in a season where they have slowly climbed up the national rankings and reached third place in the ultra-competitive Big East Conference.
