Voice Top 25 goes back to 1995

The last time the Georgetown Hoyas were a consensus top 10 ranked preseason team was in the fall of 1995 when they were ranked fifth and led by a skinny sophomore named Allen Iverson. Since then, a lot has changed. That skinny sophomore became one of the NBA’s greatest-ever scoring guards with a distaste for practice, and somehow Tom Cruise and Mel Gibson went from being elite actors to just plain acting insane.

So, as only The Voice can do, we’ll try and recall some of those pop-culture memories from 1995 that can make us appreciate just how long it has been since the basketball program has been this highly regarded in the preseason top 25. Here’s The Voice’s version of the poll.

Hoyas look to keep homecoming win streak alive

Homecoming is the time of year when alumni reconvene to catch up on old times and reminisce about the things that defined their time on the Hilltop. Georgetown’s football team hasn’t provided many of these joyous memories during the course of this season, but they’ll hope to change that as they face Marist this Saturday at 1 p.m. at The Yard.

XC places second in Big East

The Georgetown cross country program was successful at the Big East Championships this past Friday in Boston. Both the men’s and women’s team came away with second place finishes. The men’s team trailed only six points behind Providence’s 52 while the women’s team scored 68 points, second also to Providence’s 39.

Field hockey ends Big East play winless

The Georgetown University field hockey team dropped a 4-2 decision to Holy Cross (13-5) last Sunday to finish the season with a record of 5-12 overall and 0-6 in the Big East Conference. Although this record does not scream success, the team put together a solid overall performance in what was their first season in Big East Conference play.

Controversy filled the lungs of the World Series faster than Kenny Rogers could wash his hands. I am not a Tigers fan but have been supporting them this postseason. Rogers’ dirty hand, though, made me begin to question my support of possible cheaters. I couldn’t let my baseball morals deteriorate.

Turnovers kill Hoyas’ chances once again

Much like Bill Murray’s character in Groundhog Day, the Georgetown football team (1-6, 0-4) is having a recurring bad dream. The Hoyas were once again stricken by key turnovers and an anemic offense in their 17-7 loss to the Bucknell Bison.

WV’s Smith ‘two’ much for GU

Last Saturday, the Georgetown men’s soccer team (5-11-0, 2-8-0 BE) had more to worry about than running into the best team in the Big East, then-No. 6 West Virginia (12-1-2, 7-0-1 BE). They also collided with the man who is responsible for putting together the greatest single season offensive performance in conference history as they were brushed aside by the visiting Mountaineers, 2-0.

Women hit winless road trip

The Georgetown women’s soccer team (4-8-4, 1-6-2 BE) found themselves all but eliminated from post-season play after another tough weekend in the unforgiving Big East Conference. The first of the two weekend match-ups came on the road and ended with a 1-1 tie with Pittsburgh (7-5-3, 1-5-2 BE) on Friday.

Still no BE victory for Hoyas

A conference win eluded the Georgetown volleyball team for a sixth time as Saturday afternoon’s game proved to be a tough one for the Lady Hoyas. The Hoyas, ranked 14th in the Big East Conference, lost 3-2 against the University of South Florida, which is ranked seventh in the conference.

Glaccum, Hoyas skin Leopards

Sometimes all the skill in the world won’t translate into a victory. You have to want to win more than your opponent, and oftentimes playing with heart can overcome any disparity in talent. Following a lackluster 4-1 loss to No. 8 Notre Dame last Saturday, the Georgetown men’s soccer team bounced back with an emphatic non-conference victory over visiting Lafayette on Tuesday, 3-0.

Hoyas return home, drop fourth straight

The feeling in the Georgetown locker room after their 28-3 loss to Lehigh was much different than after their last home game four weeks earlier. Then, the Hoyas celebrated their first victory under new Head Coach Kevin Kelly and were poised to make a hopefully successful three-game road trip. Now, they find themselves in the middle of a four-game losing streak after the Mountain Hawks spoiled their return home to the Yard.

Hoyas ruffle Hens’ feathers

Georgetown tennis continues to show rapid progress under the leadership of new Head Coach Gordie Ernst. After being routed by the University of Delaware last spring in a 6-1 loss, the Hoyas avenged the loss this past Sunday with a 4-3 victory over the Blue Hens at the McDonough Tennis Complex.

FAST BREAK: Point guard commits to Georgetown

Chris Wright from St. John’s College H.S. verbally committed to play for the Georgetown Hoyas next year. Last season he averaged 21.8 points for St. John’s and is the No. 6 ranked point guard in the 2007 recruiting class.
