Battle of the Sexes

There are two genders in our world: the male and the female. By and large, the male enjoys viewing sports more than the female, for the simple reason that if he can’t talk about sports effectively at a young age, he will be cast aside by the masses. A case in point of this situation: In the summer before sixth grade, when I was a hugely fat, zit-infested kid who wore striped clothing way too much and talked with a lisp, I went to a summer program geared towards really smart kids.

Around 2:40 p.m. last Saturday afternoon, the MCI Center was enveloped in darkness, with only a handful of employees running around, lowering the baskets to the floor and cleaning up the aisles. Slowly, however, a young man strode down the hallway from the locker rooms onto the court, running one hand through his hair in distress, while the other clutched a Diet Pepsi.

Women’s lacrosse looks to build on past success

The Georgetown women’s lacrosse team, ranked fourth in the nation by Lacrosse Magazine’s preseason poll, will aim to return to the NCAA finals this year, despite losing six starters to graduation. Included in the Hoyas’ graduating class was attack Sheehan Stanwick, the most prolific scorer in the 25-year history of the program.

In the 2001-02 Syracuse Men’s Basketball media guide, under the “Opponents” section, Georgetown’s senior point guard is dubbed as “Kevin Breswell.” Whether or not this typo was motivation for the Hoyas, Braswell and company made sure the No. 10 Orangemen won’t forget their names anytime soon with a 75-60 drubbing at MCI Center on Monday night.

Hoyas continue up and down season

With less than one minute remaining in last Saturday’s home game against the surprising Pittsburgh Panthers, first-year guard Drew Hall approached the line with the Hoyas trailing 66-64 and calmly sank two free throws to tie the game. The MCI Center, for several shining moments, resembled Cameron Indoor Stadium, the student-crazed home court of the Duke Blue Devils.

And the show has reached a new low. Just when you thought that sports couldn’t get any more about media hype and less about actual ability, it did, and it has been helped along by none other then the world’s most famous sports network, ESPN. This month, US magazine along with ESPN announced the World’s Sexiest Athletes Contest, which will culminate in a two-hour awards special on Jan.

Horvath leads Hoyas

The Georgetown women’s basketball team defeated Pittsburgh last night 73-56 after losing to Syracuse last Saturday 89-61 and falling to No. 1-ranked University of Connecticut 85-41 earlier last week.

Despite the tough loss to UConn, the Hoyas came back to put up a fight against the Orangewomen.

On the eve of my 21st birthday, Mets General Manager Steve Phillips gave me a present. Granted, when compared to true blockbuster trades, and even when compared to other trades Phillips has made this off-season, it wasn’t exactly a huge deal. Eleven players changing uniforms is always interesting, but the gift that Phillips sent me wasn’t Jeromy Burnitz, Mark Sweeney, Jeff D’Amico and Lou Collier.

Hoyas turn season around, win two straight

With 11:07 remaining in the Hoyas’ 84-58 win over Seton Hall on Wednesday night, Pirates senior guard Ty Shine stood at the three-point line, tying his shoe, as an entire sports arena exploded with applause. Could Shine’s looping motion possibly be this transfixing?

Moments earlier, Georgetown senior point guard Kevin Braswell had done the stuff of playground legend?and literally faked Shine out of one of his Nikes?on a crossover dribble just beyond the three point line.

The Georgetown indoor track team continued its stellar streak this past weekend, posting 13 first-place finishes at the Rutgers Invitational in Piscataway, N.J. The team came off an impressive finish at the Terrapin Invitational last weekend, where Georgetown recorded several winning times.

I was sitting on my beer-drenched couch in the bowels of Henle last Saturday, watching the Hoyas dismantle Boston College, and then it hit me like a Brett Favre spiral across the middle: it’s great to be a college sophomore in America on a day like today. Sitting on the couch on a mild January weekend, with a cheesesteak on the way and 10 hours of uninterrupted sports coverage on tap is just an affirmation of everything right and true in the American spirit.
