Last week, Bud Selig finally shelved all the contraction nonsense for the time being. Good news, Expos fan. Oh, how wonderful it will be to spend the upcoming season watching those magical marvels of baseball majesty … the Montreal Expos?

No, the Expos probably won’t excite many this season, but I’m glad that the contraction plan didn’t go through.

Indoor track scores at Armory Invitational

Last weekend, the Georgetown men’s and women’s indoor track and field teams competed at the second annual Armory Collegiate Invitational, which is regarded as the nation’s premier collegiate invitational of the season. Several runners posted NCAA provisional qualifying times and the women’s distance medley team ran the fastest time in the country this season.

Has the bubble burst?

With 13 minutes left in regulation in last Saturday’s game against rival Notre Dame, Fighting Irish power forward Ryan Humphrey collected his fourth foul, with the game tied at 61. Throughout the rest of the game, Georgetown Head Coach Craig Esherick instructed his team to pound the ball inside, trying to draw the final foul on Humphrey.

Yeah, Belichick made the right decision in starting Brady. In the biggest sports’ upset of our lifetime, the 14-point underdog New England Patriots defeated the obelisk of offensive efficiency that was the St. Louis Rams. Even more remarkable than the upset was that the game was fantastic.

Battle of the Sexes

There are two genders in our world: the male and the female. By and large, the male enjoys viewing sports more than the female, for the simple reason that if he can’t talk about sports effectively at a young age, he will be cast aside by the masses. A case in point of this situation: In the summer before sixth grade, when I was a hugely fat, zit-infested kid who wore striped clothing way too much and talked with a lisp, I went to a summer program geared towards really smart kids.

The Winter Olympic games begin this Friday in Salt Lake City, and the normally dormant state of Utah becomes the focus of the world’s attention. Not since 1932 has the United States won the medal race on its home soil. In Nagano, Japan four years ago, the United States finished fifth.

Hoyas climb over Mountaineers

Around 2:40 p.m. last Saturday afternoon, the MCI Center was enveloped in darkness, with only a handful of employees running around, lowering the baskets to the floor and cleaning up the aisles. Slowly, however, a young man strode down the hallway from the locker rooms onto the court, running one hand through his hair in distress, while the other clutched a Diet Pepsi.

Women’s lacrosse looks to build on past success

The Georgetown women’s lacrosse team, ranked fourth in the nation by Lacrosse Magazine’s preseason poll, will aim to return to the NCAA finals this year, despite losing six starters to graduation. Included in the Hoyas’ graduating class was attack Sheehan Stanwick, the most prolific scorer in the 25-year history of the program.

Despite the strongest efforts of Syracuse centers Craig Forth and Billy Celuck, the Hoyas best game of the season came in the most important contest of the year, a huge 15-point home win against Syracuse.

However, in that second loss of the year, Pats longtime quarterback, Drew Bledsoe, injured himself and control of the Patriots offense shifted to a second-year pro from Michigan, Tom Brady.

In the 2001-02 Syracuse Men’s Basketball media guide, under the “Opponents” section, Georgetown’s senior point guard is dubbed as “Kevin Breswell.” Whether or not this typo was motivation for the Hoyas, Braswell and company made sure the No. 10 Orangemen won’t forget their names anytime soon with a 75-60 drubbing at MCI Center on Monday night.

As in life, success in sports is based upon the bedrock principles of accountability and results. If you don’t get results, then you are always held accountable. Whether you are Phil Jackson or Michael Jordan, Craig Esherick or Kevin Braswell, sports fans want victories, and there will be hell to pay if they feel their team does not play up to their potential.

Hoyas continue up and down season

With less than one minute remaining in last Saturday’s home game against the surprising Pittsburgh Panthers, first-year guard Drew Hall approached the line with the Hoyas trailing 66-64 and calmly sank two free throws to tie the game. The MCI Center, for several shining moments, resembled Cameron Indoor Stadium, the student-crazed home court of the Duke Blue Devils.

And the show has reached a new low. Just when you thought that sports couldn’t get any more about media hype and less about actual ability, it did, and it has been helped along by none other then the world’s most famous sports network, ESPN. This month, US magazine along with ESPN announced the World’s Sexiest Athletes Contest, which will culminate in a two-hour awards special on Jan.

Horvath leads Hoyas

The Georgetown women’s basketball team defeated Pittsburgh last night 73-56 after losing to Syracuse last Saturday 89-61 and falling to No. 1-ranked University of Connecticut 85-41 earlier last week.

Despite the tough loss to UConn, the Hoyas came back to put up a fight against the Orangewomen.

I am a fair-weather fan. Once the clouds roll in, I’m gone, off to the less-disappointing pastures of unaffiliated fandom.

Having grown up in the Chicago area, this comes as second nature. You see, Chicago sports fans as a whole are not known for their optimism or, for that matter, loyalty.
