Georgetown Boxing Club showcases national talent

After 8 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays, if a student chooses to leave the shelter of their dorm and bravely venture into Leo’s Down Under, they may find themselves rubbing elbows with one of the most underappreciated, dedicated sports programs on campus. Following a long practice of “keeping calm and dropping bombs,” the members of the co-ed Georgetown Boxing Club like to cool down by heading to late night for a family dinner. The relationships forged between these teammates on the Hilltop ring give a whole new meaning to the term “tough love.”

The Sports Sermon: The Gentle Way at Georgetown

Georgetown is all about world-class programs. From finance to athletics, we take great pride in being ranked alongside the best. Among the celebrated top tier programs here on the Hilltop resides yet another notable group of competitors—the Washington Judo Club, which includes members from the University and surrounding community. The club has been producing nationally acclaimed competitors under the instruction of venerable coaches for over half a century. As a novice member of the club, being thrown week after week by these competitors has been a lesson in personal development.

Women’s lacrosse finally falters in Big East

After defeating Marquette (2-12) 13-7 in Milwaukee this past Friday, the No. 8 Georgetown women’s lacrosse team (9-3, 3-1 Big East) completed their Midwestern road trip in South Bend , Ind. on Sunday with a 13-12 loss at the hands of No. 6 Notre Dame (11-1, 5-1 Big East). Despite three goals by senior midfielder Sophia Thomas, as well as two apiece from senior midfielder Kelsi Bozel and junior midfielder Meghan Farrell, the Hoyas failed to complete a last-minute comeback.

Double-Teamed: Sport in its simplest sense

Sept. 11 did not come to my mind on Monday, at least not initially. Instead, my mind wandered to 10 days after that fateful day in 2001, to September 21. That day, Mike Piazza and the Mets resurrected New York City’s vibrancy from the horrors of the attack on the World Trade Center. For about three hours, people around the city and the nation were afforded an escape from it all. Piazza’s game-winning homerun that day simply topped an incredibly unifying day.

Men’s lax lacking discipline

Despite gaining momentum after a dramatic 14-13 overtime win against St. John’s (7-4, 2-3 Big East) on April 6, the Georgetown men’s lacrosse team (5-7, 2-2 Big East) couldn’t hang on to a 4-goal lead this past Monday against No. 4 Notre Dame.

After an infidelity scandal and the destruction of his first marriage, Tiger Woods has had a rough few years. The flack he was dealt off the course coupled with the 107-week winless struggle in competition gave the impression that the face of professional golf would never rise again. But now, with three top finishes and a World No. 1 ranking thus far in 2013, Nike would beg to differ.

Baseball eyes opportunity in Big East

Despite a couple poor results on their trip to the Golden State this past weekend, the Georgetown men’s baseball team (19-11 overall, 3-3 Big East) strolled to a 9-1 victory against cross-town rival George Washington University (11-21, 5-4 Atlantic 10) on Tuesday in a showing of their potential on both sides of the diamond.

Women’s lax looks for third Big East win

It has been a fantastic start for the No. 9 Georgetown women’s lacrosse team. With an overall record of 7-2 and a conference record of 2-0 in the Big East, the team has been building steady momentum that will hopefully lead to a conference championship. The outstanding display of teamwork in the previous games has been a positive factor in the success of the Hoyas, especially on the defensive end, as highlighted by sophomore defender Adrianne Devine.

Men’s lacrosse fails to tame Wildcats in fourth-quarter loss

Coming off an exciting 17-12 home win this past Friday against Marquette (2-5), the Georgetown men’s lacrosse team (4-6, 1-1 Big East) lost 8-6 in disappointing fashion to Villanova (3-6, 2-0 Big East). Facing a 6-5 deficit after the third quarter, the Wildcats scored three unanswered goals in the fourth quarter that helped catapult them to victory.

The 2013 season was starting to look pretty bleak for the New York Yankees: The Bronx Bombers set a new MLB record for highest opening day payroll at $230.4 million on Monday and then went on to get convincingly handled by the Boston Red Sox 8-2—not quite the start you would expect out of the most valuable team in history. The woes do not stop there, though, as their disabled list could almost fill an All-Star team starting lineup.

Double-Teamed: Gyms are the new sweatshops

I did a little bit of a double take on the Rutgers news this week. My initial reaction to reports of men’s basketball coach Mike Rice’s verbal and physical abuse of his players was pretty nonchalant; “Tough love,” I thought. Then I saw the video. Fiery passion is one thing, but Rice’s callous disregard for his players as humans needed to be addressed.

After Robert Griffin III’s knee buckled under the weight of the city’s expectations, Georgetown students eager to get into D.C. sports were left with only the underachievers who play in the Verizon Center. Baseball fever, however, has made its way through the city. Two years ago, the Nationals were a sub-500 team, and three years ago, they barely fended off a 100-loss season. Then, it was 2012, and things snapped into place.

Bearcats up first for Hoyas in Big East tournament play

On Jan. 19, a late season collapse appeared to be inevitable for Georgetown men’s basketball (24-5, 14-4 Big East). The Hoyas had lost to the worst team in the Big East, South Florida (12-19, 3-15 Big East), 61-58 and had lost three of their last five games. The team’s second leading scorer and rebounder, sophomore forward Greg Whittington, was declared academically ineligible and was likely out for the rest of the year.
