Stepping off the plane in Dallas last Friday amidst cowboy hats and wide-open spaces, I was immediately thrown into the pulsating mixture of my relatives?great aunts from California, second cousins from Oklahoma, parents from Missouri?all in Dallas to celebrate my great-grandmother’s 90th birthday.

Last spring, I was abroad in Santiago, Chile, and while I was there I dated a television producer. He was then working on a WWF-style wrestling show, the first of its kind to air in Chile. One night, during a pretty intense argument, he told me that as a television producer surrounded by beautiful people, he had options?he could date girls 10 times better looking than I was.

On Monday morning, Oct. 7, a 13-year-old boy was shot in the chest as his mother dropped him off in front of his middle school in Bowie, Md. The boy was the eighth victim in a series of sniper-style shootings that have left six dead and two seriously wounded in the suburbs of our nation’s capital over the past week.

In defense of IMF/World Bank protesters

The recent editorial, “Leave the McDonald’s alone,” (Sept. 26, 2002) is yet another instance of the biased, close-minded and poorly reported media representations of anti-corporate globalization protests that have dominated coverage since 1999. The editorial consisted of nothing but fabrications, counterintuitive inferences and baseless accusations, while managing to ignore completely any of the real issues.

There was a time in my life when I harbored serious disdain for those who catered to their own irrational fear of flying in airplanes. Indeed, what could be safer than an airplane? Trains derail, cars crash, pedestrians trip on curbs or get hit by said cars.

I disagree with Gilbert Cruz’s article questioning the reputation of Seven Samurai (“Kurosawa classic hits AFI,” Sept. 12). Kurosawa’s masterpiece deserves every bit of praise it has received over the years and belongs at the top of the film canon for any student of the medium.

I stand apart from my friends on the lawn of a concert venue during a Lauryn Hill show. I look through my glasses at Lauryn, sitting with her head wrapped. A spotlight focuses on her, her microphone and her guitar. An MTV logo floats behind her shoulder. The Microsoft Hearts Network, or “Hearts,” while carelessly thrown into the Games folder with mere run-of-the-mill diversions, is a fine game deserving of occupying its very own folder. You may have passed over it for the lonely procrastinator’s favorite, Solitaire, the migraine-inducing Minesweeper, the not-without-its-charm Space Cadet Pinball or even for the tragically impoverished Freecell.

Last week’s editorial on the upcoming World Bank/IMF protests, (“Wanted: Police protection,” Sept. 5), while supporting the easily defendable sentiment that safety is important and that everyone should feel secure, nevertheless completely misses the essential issues, relying upon the faulty premise that spending more money to provide more police officers and more riot gear is the best way to ensure safety and security for the city.

If you walked around campus yesterday, you would have undoubtedly noticed many commemorations in remembrance of the tragedy of Sept. 11. In all, 3,025 people were murdered on that day, representing 82 countries. What you would have missed while walking through Red Square, however, were the flags of 68 nations who lost citizens.

The benefits of a full-on homestay

I was supposed to leave for England later this month in order to begin a year abroad at St. Peter’s College, Oxford. Yes, I was mere weeks away from gowns, tea, cake, cloudy weather and all of the other attendant debauchery of the U.K. experience when I made my decision to cast it all aside in favor of other pursuits, the first of which is a few weeks abroad at a little place called my parents’ house in Denver.
