After dropping a three-game set to Big East opponent Seton Hall, Georgetown baseball (12-21) suffered another setback against George Mason on Wednesday. This loss marked the Hoyas second defeat to the Patriots in just five games. Since the April 3 loss to George Mason, Georgetown has dropped five straight while being outscored by opponents 31-15.
Coach Peter Wilk sent freshman ace Tim Adleman to the mound on Wednesday, hoping to change the Hoyas’ luck. The freshman struggled from the start. After Adleman retired the first two hitters, the Patriots rallied with three consecutive base hits. (pixelsmithstudios.com) Adleman threw two wild pitches, setting up a Jason Bour double and putting the Hoyas in an early 3-0 hole. The embattled pitcher settled down after that point, allowing the team’s offense to stage a mid-game comeback. After struggling in the first two innings of Wednesday’s game, the Hoya offense capitalized when Patriots pitcher Trevor Rosenberg walked freshman Tom Elliot and senior Mark McLaughlin, then hit senior Derek DeGrijs with a pitch. Wasting no time, hot-hitting junior short-stop Matt Bouchard stepped up and lined a single to center, scoring two on the play. Unable to bring any more runs to the plate in that inning, the team would rally again in the fifth inning when DeGrijs scored on a wild pitch. Matt Harrigan then singled in another run to give the Hoyas a 4-3 lead.
The lead was not enough when Adleman gave up a run in the sixth. Coach Wilk pulled the freshman starter for freshman reliever Jack Bender. Mason’s cleanup hitter Scott Krieger took advantage of the cold pitcher, cranking a homerun to right field for three more runs. The Hoyas had no response, failing to record a hit in the next two innings.
Georgetown falls to 1-12 on the road. The next task is an important series against Notre Dame. The Hoyas will head to South Bend on Friday where they look to pick up some conference wins against the Big East bottom dwellers.
