Georgetown’s 12th-ranked Men’s Lacrosse team beat the Blue Hens of Delaware University 18-10 in its fourth game of the season yesterday. The Hoyas, who suffered a tough double overtime loss to Syracuse this past Sunday, got back on the winning track against the 7th ranked Blue Hens (5-0). The win was the Hoyas’ first against a ranked opponent in three tries. Delaware, which made a surprise run to the Final Four last season on the heels of junior face-off specialist Alex Smith, dropped to 3-1 against ranked opponents after knocking off UMBC, Rutgers and Albany.
The first quarter ended with Georgetown up 1-0, despite Delaware’s leads in face-offs won (2-1) and ground balls (6-4). The Hoyas played well against Delaware’s extended zone defense and took 10 shots to the Blue Hens’ nine.
At the outset of the second quarter, Delaware’s up-tempo style of play gave them the upper hand, netting unassisted goals by Vincent Giordano, Beau Davis and Tommy Lee. Davis’s shot, a behind-the-back stunner from the right side of the cage, was particularly impressive.
Georgetown, however, slowed the pace of the game and responded with six second quarter goals, including two by senior attacker Brendan Cannon and two assists by sophomore attacker Craig Dowd. Delaware answered with one more goal on a fast break with 3:17 left in the half, and at the midway point the Hoyas led 7-4.
Delaware found the back of the net three times in the third quarter, but they were no match for the Hoyas’ eight goals, including two apiece from senior attacker Andrew Baird and Cannon.
The Hoyas finished strong in the final 15 minutes—something they could not do in their previous game against the Orange.
“I looked at the Syracuse game tape again and we made bad decisions,” Head Coach Dave Urick said. “I hope that we learned from it.”
Georgetown will play next at home against East Coast Athletic Conference opponent Hobart on Saturday at 1 p.m., and will host Duke, the defending national runner-up, on Saturday, March 22 at 11 p.m.
