Critical Voices: Neko Case

February 26, 2009

On the cover of her new album, Middle Cyclone, Neko Case  perches atop the hood of a ‘70s muscle car, wielding a giant sword. Needless to say, it is a strong contender for Album Art of the Year. Luckily, the actual music on the album, holds its own as well, with an alluring and soulful collection of mother nature-inspired ditties.

Case’s music is a satisfying mixture of country, folk, and Americana, tied together by her graceful voice and smart, whimsical lyrics. Her impeccably produced new album entices listeners with catchy choruses and a worn-in feel.

Throughout Cyclone, Case sings of the broken-hearted and the breakers of hearts in almost equal measure. She’s a “man-eater,” as she proudly yet seductively repeats on “People Got a Lotta Nerve,” but also a sentimental lover, as is poignantly evident on “Don’t Forget Me,” a Harry Nilsson cover. Perhaps not as imaginative or striking as some of her earlier efforts, Middle Cyclone is nonetheless a solid showcase of Case’s formidable talents.
