After a dramatic walk-off win over Navy, the Georgetown baseball team was back on the field yesterday to take on cross-town rival George Washington. Led by sophomore Sean Lamont and Junior Tom Elliott, the Hoyas proved their D.C. dominance as they crushed the Colonials 15-3.
During the game, Georgetown overcame one of their most nagging problems of the season—hitting with runners on base—coming through with timely hits and leaving only seven men on base the entire game.
Lamont and Elliott each had two home runs as Georgetown exploded for seven runs in the fourth inning.
GW took off to an early lead, scoring three runs in the first inning. Starting pitcher Tommy Isaacs got off to a rough start as the first four hitters reached base after a pair of walks and hit-by-pitches. The Hoyas weren’t fazed, however, and patiently waited for their offense to pick up the slack.
“We were more relaxed and didn’t panic when we fell behind in the first inning,” Coach Pete Wilk said, explaining that the previous win had bolstered his team.
It also helped that Georgetown got quality innings from the rest of the pitching staff as Isaacs settled down and freshman Bobby Kirby got his first win of the season after tossing two shutout innings to go along with four strikeouts.
The last two games have been promising for the Hoyas as they have shown they are able to beat less talented teams handily. The team spent a disappointing week in Florida over spring break, going 2-7 at Rollins College Baseball Week. As any student will attest, though, it’s always good to be back on the Hilltop.
“They know the surroundings and they can sleep in their own beds and stay in a familiar routine,” Wilk said.
This is the first time in the young season that Georgetown has won two straight games, and their confidence is running high. The Hoyas will have to maintain this intensity if they want to continue their success as they travel to Louisville for a three-game series this weekend. (fernandez-vega.com)
