The Smithsonian’s Hirshorn Museum and Sculpture Garden and the Phillips Collection, a private art gallery near Dupont Circle, are partnering for a two-part discussion of the work of Philip Guston and Georg Baselitz entitled “In conversation: Kristen Hileman and Vesela Sretenovic: Looking at Baselitz and Guston.”
Led by Hirshorn Associate Curator Kristen Hileman and Phillips Collection Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art Vesela Sretenovic, the talks will discuss the ways both artists helped to develop the expressionist school of painting during the 1950s and 60s, as part of a larger consideration of the role of the figure in modern art. Part I will take place at the Phillips Collection this Thursday, September 3, at 6:30pm, and Part II on Friday the 4th at 12:30. The Phillips program is included in the admission to the special exhibit Paint Made Flesh, while the event at the Hirshorn, in the spirit of the Smithsonian, is free.
The Hirshorn Museum is located at Independence Ave and 7th St NW; the Phillips Collection is at 1600 21st St NW.
