Hoyas beat Mountaineers, clinch tournament berth

With 5:15 remaining at West Virginia (13-14 overall, 4-11 Big East) Tuesday night, the Georgetown men’s basketball team (14-12 overall, 6-9 Big East) held a comfortable 63-53 lead. But with this year’s Hoyas, no lead is ever comfortable.

While the Mountaineers battled back to tie the game at 63, the Hoyas were able to hold on for a 69-67 win, due to clutch foul shooting, fortunate non-foul calls and a heads-up move by Head Coach Craig Esherick.

Baseball (1-2, 0-0 Big East)—As if having their home field turned into a parking lot and finishing last year with a 9-47 record wasn’t enough, Georgetown baseball has started off this season playing only three of their scheduled 14 games to date due to inclement weather.

Hoyas keep Big East Tournament hopes alive

With 6:30 left in the Georgetown men’s basketball team’s (13-11 overall, 5-8 Big East) 71-56 romp over Providence (13-12 overall, 6-8 Big East) on Tuesday, Friars’ sophomore forward Ryan Gomes backed down Hoyas’ junior forward Mike Sweetney. Over the past five minutes, the two 6-7 behemoths had combined to score 18 of the game’s last 19 points and Gomes was looking for more.

Women’s lacrosse opens season with blowout

The women’s lacrosse team kicked off the preseason with a bang on Tuesday, beating Big East foe Virginia Tech 17-5 at the University of Maryland’s Artificial Turf Facility.

Junior midfielder Anouk Peters and sophomore midfielder Ali Chambers finished with four goals each to lead all scorers.

Hoyas schooled by UConn, 97-57

As 1,879 noisy fans looked on in a packed McDonough Arena, the Georgetown women’s basketball team (14-11 overall, 5-9 Big East) meekly handed No. 1 Connecticut its 65th straight win last night, 97-57. Though junior forward Rebekkah Brunson led all scorers with 20 points, the Hoyas lost their second consecutive game by 40 points or more.

Not much separated the Georgetown Hoyas men’s basketball team (11-11 overall, 3-8 Big East) from the No. 9 Pittsburgh Panthers (18-4 overall, 8-3 Big East) Tuesday night in the Hoyas 82-67 loss. Simply put, the Panthers came through in the clutch; the Hoyas didn’t.
