Poker, a game that separates the men from the boys. I got hooked on it sophomore year at Georgetown. With my regular crew of six or seven friends, we all matured as players during those weekly six- to 10-hour marathon sessions in Village B.

Hoyas fall to No. 1 Terps, 13-10

If you had left at halftime of yesterday’s Georgetown women’s lacrosse game against Maryland, you would have thought the Hoyas were poised to hand the No. 1 Terps their first loss of the season. The upset was not to be, however, as No. 6 Georgetown succumbed to a second-half slide that dropped its all-time record against Maryland to 1-13.

I will sock the next wise ass who says this. We need to dispense with this mindless cliche once and for all. To argue that Georgetown or St. John’s is a worse team than No. 16 seeds Vermont or South Carolina State is sophistry, an argument built on the fallacy that the 65 teams selected for the NCAA Tournament are the 65 best teams in the country.

The Hoyas had a chance, but it slipped away too quickly.

With 9.8 seconds remaining in Georgetown’s 70-67 loss to St. John’s (21-13) in the National Invitation Tournament Finals Thursday night, Hoyas junior swingman Gerald Riley threw up a off-balance three pointer that clanged off the rim and into the hands of Red Storm junior forward Grady Reynolds.

Hoyas beat Tar Heels, advance to NIT semifinal

“I think we’ve learned how to win now,” said Georgetown Head Coach Craig Esherick following last night’s exhilarating 79-74 victory in front of a raucous crowd at North Carolina in the quarterfinals of the National Invitation Tournament.

Up 68-60 with 4:09 remaining, Georgetown (18-14), like so many previous times this year began to let the game slip away, allowing the Tar Heels (19-16) to go on a 10-2 run in the next two minutes and tie the game at 70.

Why I love the National Invitation Tournament

It has been a rough four years for seniors like me who love Hoyas basketball. We have had our great moments, but far more “what if’s.” I often wonder what it would have been like to go to a university with a more successful basketball program, for as much as I hate to admit it, I often envy the Dukies in March.

Blue Devils upset Hoyas, Tigers next

The No. 3 Georgetown women’s lacrosse team suffered its first loss of the season on Saturday on North Kehoe Field as the visiting No. 4 Duke Blue Devils held on for a 14-11 victory. Senior attacker Wick Stanwick paced the Hoyas with four goals and an assist.

Hoyas beat Mountaineers, clinch tournament berth

With 5:15 remaining at West Virginia (13-14 overall, 4-11 Big East) Tuesday night, the Georgetown men’s basketball team (14-12 overall, 6-9 Big East) held a comfortable 63-53 lead. But with this year’s Hoyas, no lead is ever comfortable.

While the Mountaineers battled back to tie the game at 63, the Hoyas were able to hold on for a 69-67 win, due to clutch foul shooting, fortunate non-foul calls and a heads-up move by Head Coach Craig Esherick.

Baseball (1-2, 0-0 Big East)—As if having their home field turned into a parking lot and finishing last year with a 9-47 record wasn’t enough, Georgetown baseball has started off this season playing only three of their scheduled 14 games to date due to inclement weather.

As a young sports fanatic growing up in Brooklyn, I had many New York sports heroes. Don Mattingly, Mark Messier, Lawrence Taylor … the list goes on. One man however, stood above them all, literally and figuratively. This man was a 7-foot-tall Jamaican basketball player out of Georgetown University.
