Poker, a game that separates the men from the boys. I got hooked on it sophomore year at Georgetown. With my regular crew of six or seven friends, we all matured as players during those weekly six- to 10-hour marathon sessions in Village B.

If you had left at halftime of yesterday’s Georgetown women’s lacrosse game against Maryland, you would have thought the Hoyas were poised to hand the No. 1 Terps their first loss of the season. The upset was not to be, however, as No. 6 Georgetown succumbed to a second-half slide that dropped its all-time record against Maryland to 1-13.

To argue that Georgetown or St. John’s is a worse team than No. 16 seeds Vermont or South Carolina State is sophistry, an argument built on the fallacy that the 65 teams selected for the NCAA Tournament are the 65 best teams in the country.

Hoyas beat Tar Heels, advance to NIT semifinal

“I think we’ve learned how to win now,” said Georgetown Head Coach Craig Esherick following last night’s exhilarating 79-74 victory in front of a raucous crowd at North Carolina in the quarterfinals of the National Invitation Tournament.

Up 68-60 with 4:09 remaining, Georgetown (18-14), like so many previous times this year began to let the game slip away, allowing the Tar Heels (19-16) to go on a 10-2 run in the next two minutes and tie the game at 70.

Hoyas beat Mountaineers, clinch tournament berth

With 5:15 remaining at West Virginia (13-14 overall, 4-11 Big East) Tuesday night, the Georgetown men’s basketball team (14-12 overall, 6-9 Big East) held a comfortable 63-53 lead. But with this year’s Hoyas, no lead is ever comfortable.

While the Mountaineers battled back to tie the game at 63, the Hoyas were able to hold on for a 69-67 win, due to clutch foul shooting, fortunate non-foul calls and a heads-up move by Head Coach Craig Esherick.
