With win, men’s basketball tops Big East rankings

Monday night’s win over No. 18 Marquette (17-6, 8-3 Big East) marked the sixth consecutive victory for No. 15 Georgetown (18-4, 8-3 Big East), as they edged their way to a final score of 63-55. With the win, Georgetown avenged a 49-48 loss at Marquette on Jan. 5 earlier this year.

The Sports Sermon: King Felix extended to 2019

Major League Baseball history was made on Tuesday with the signing of the largest ever contract for a pitcher. Usually when this kind of news comes out, baseball fans wonder which massive payroll team is pulling in more big names and packing rosters with numerous All-Star candidates. Clubs like the New York Yankees, Philadelphia Phillies, Boston Red Sox, and Los Angeles Angels are typically the ones making headlines in the offseason, with their payrolls all surpassing $150 million. This time, though, it is the Seattle Mariners who have jumped into the spotlight with their contract extension finalized with pitcher Felix Hernandez.

Softball ends tournament on high note

As temperatures climb, the Hoya student body can finally welcome the arrival of Georgetown’s spring sports season. For the Georgetown Hoyas softball team (1-4), this weekend marked the first of what is sure to be many opportunities to showcase their talents. The Hoyas traveled to Miami for a slate of five games in the Florida International University Tournament.

Unsportsmanlike Conduct: Signing day out of bounds

Last week, one of college football’s most celebrated holidays took place as the top high school recruits in the country revealed to the nation what college they would be attending. ESPNU covered the events for 11 and a half hours providing analysis and live coverage of the press conferences. It’s a fun process, as players get publicity and fans get to be excited about how good their teams will be the next few years or in some cases, they get to be disappointed by how poorly their team’s coaches recruited. But, despite all of that, things have gotten a little out of hand.

Women’s basketball falling fast

After a disappointing 76-72 overtime loss to St. John’s (11-10, 5-4 Big East) this past Saturday, the Georgetown women’s basketball team (13-11, 4-7 Big East) failed to get back in the winning column on Tuesday night as they fell to archrival Syracuse (20-3, 8-2 Big East) 69-60 at McDonough Arena.

Sports

Basketball beating trend with four straight wins

This is the time of year that usually has Hoya fans praying for wins. In the recent past, the turn of the new year usually coincides with a slip from a non-conference hot streak for the Georgetown men’s basketball team (16-4, 6-3 Big East). While this is not unreasonable given the strength of the Big East, the slaughter at the hands of Pittsburgh after a tough loss at Marquette, in addition to the loss of sophomore forward Greg Whittington left the Hoya faithful with a familiar feeling of worry.

The Sports Sermon: Beyoncé takes Super Bowl stage

Super Bowls are remembered for a few pivotal plays or colorful characters on the field. With over 100 million people tuning in to watch the event, though, there are bound to be those who are not avid football fans, preferring the spectacle of a glitzy halftime show to the back-and-forth movement of the pigskin.

Double-Teamed: Lubick this year’s big man

One of the joys of college basketball, at least for fans, is watching players grow up. Many times, that evolution is startling, making it all the more memorable. Remember Henry Sims from last season? Of course you do. But there are certain times when that maturing occurs right under our noses. Halfway through this year’s Big East campaign, Nate Lubick’s transformation into the Hoyas’ best big man and vocal leader serves as the latest example.

Women’s basketball mired in middle

This past Saturday, the Georgetown women’s basketball team (13-9, 4-5 Big East) failed to continue its two-game winning streak, as they fell to No. 12 Louisville (19-4, 7-2 Big East) 74-60. Despite only being down four points at the break, the Cardinals proved too much to handle for the Hoyas in the second-half as they cruised to a win.

Highs and lows for tennis

Streaks are one of sports’ great, unsolved mysteries. For whatever reason, teams of the highest and lowest caliber can inexplicably embark on winning or losing runs that defy all logic. It’s a query both the men’s and women’s tennis teams will be pondering in the days to come, although for very different reasons.

Men’s basketball makes quick work of Pirates

On Wednesday night, the Blue and Gray (15-4, 5-3 Big East) cruised to a 74-52 home win over Seton Hall as the Hoya defense forced the Pirates into 25 turnovers. Georgetown also held Seton Hall to just a 32.6 field goal percentage. “Our guys really executed on the defensive end,” Head Coach John Thompson III said.

Sports Sermon: Super Bowl Sunday is upon us

This Sunday brings Super Bowl XLVII to New Orleans, where the San Francisco 49ers will be taking on the Baltimore Ravens. Regarded by many as an American holiday, and consistently beating its own record as the most watched television program of the year, the Super Bowl, needless to say, is the most exciting day in American sports. And yet amidst all the endless Super Bowl traditions, this matchup promises to offer some historic moments to the annual hype.

Unsportsmanlike Conduct: Imbalance in All-Star voting

We’re officially in All-Star game season, with the Pro Bowl this past Sunday (the same day the NHL All-Star Game would have been played had there been no lockout), and the NBA All-Star Game set to take place in about two weeks.

Women’s lacrosse looks past rankings

The greatest pain in sports can be summed up in two simple phrases: coming close and falling short. Knowing that you almost made it to the top of the podium, but just could not make that final push might be the pinnacle of pain in athletics. The only way to add insult to injury in this situation is to watch a rival team ascend as you fall away. The Georgetown women’s lacrosse team knows this feeling all too well. Due to a loss to Syracuse in the semi-final of the Big East tournament last season, when the Hoyas see orange, they’ll be seeing red.

Sports

Women’s basketball at .500

On Tuesday night, the Georgetown women’s basketball team (13-8, 4-4 Big East) looked to get to .500 in Big East conference play for the first time this year, as they took on the struggling Cincinnati Bearcats (8-12, 0-7 Big East).

Four Hoya seniors drafted to Major League Soccer

This season was a huge success for the Georgetown men’s soccer team. The Hoyas finished as the second ranked team in the country, made it to the final of the College Cup, and Head Coach Brian Wiese was named the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Coach of the Year. A strong senior class helped the team through a difficult schedule and drove the success that came largely from gritty, 11th hour wins.

The Sports Sermon: Weighing in on the Manti Te’o hoax

Manti Te’o has successfully transformed ESPN’s online site into a special edition of Entertainment Tonight with what is honestly one of the most elaborate public dupes on which the press has feasted its eyes. If it is true, that is. If this story really is of a second place Heisman finalist spending four years developing a long distance relationship with someone he had never met before, then maybe the NCAA should start looking into safer helmets to prevent brain damage to their student-athletes.

Double Teamed: The Hoyas as a bad romance

Envision a girl who does not really know what she wants. One minute, she wants to pursue a relationship. The next, she backs off a little bit, fearful of commitment. The common theme for the guy invested in this girl is simple-–maddening frustration.

Men’s basketball splits weekend road trip

The Georgetown Hoyas men’s basketball team (13-4, 3-3 Big East) had an up and down weekend for the ages, suffering an embarrassing loss to the University of South Florida (10-7, 1-4 Big East), a notorious Big East bottom feeder, before rebounding just two days later with a dominant win over the University of Notre Dame (15-4, 3-3 Big East).

Tennis begins Spring agenda

The Georgetown men’s and women’s tennis teams opened up their spring schedule this past Friday in Richmond, Va. where they faced off against Campbell and Virginia Commonwealth. Although the men lost both their matches, the women managed a split with a win against Campbell and a loss against VCU.
