Through the clamor of the news, our work, and other demands of college, one finds it increasingly easy to get distracted, forgetting to take the time to slow down and unwind. Cigarettes After Sex promise an antidote to this hustle and bustle, offering slow, synth-heavy pop rock that is almost immediately likeable. On their self-titled debut album, frontman Greg Gonzalez’s dreamy, androgynous whisper is both peaceful and seductive, and draws the listener deeply into the vivid scenes of afternoons and late nights whiled away with an unidentified lover. Gonzalez’s instrumental support furthers the lovelorn atmosphere the band creates, as much playing notes as drawing a tangible mood from their instruments. Their live performances closely mirror the sound they find in their album, retaining its hazy passion while offering an intimate live experience.
Cigarettes After Sex will be playing at the 9:30 Club on Monday, April 2; doors will be at 7:00 PM. Further information can be found here.
