Hoyas slip past Vandy for Elite Eight Slot

ONLINE ONLY: EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ—Trailing Vanderbilt by one point with 14 seconds left, Georgetown came out of their final timeout. There was no confusion in sold-out Continental Airlines Arena about who would have the final touch for the Hoyas. The crowd held its collective breath as junior forward Jeff Green received the pass from junior guard Jonathan Wallace. The Commodores were as ready as anyone and quickly doubled Green with his back to the basket at the right-hand elbow.

Hoyas win big

Hoya Baseball returned to the Mid-Atlantic on Tuesday to square off against Coppin State in Hanover, Md. After going 4-5 on their Florida road trip and showing improvement with each game, the Hoyas routed Coppin State 12-0 with strong performances from a rookie pitching staff.

Track coach leads by example

As a Hoya, 26-year-old Monica Hargrove was a three-time All-American with the distance medley relay team. As a coach, she watched Georgetown’s current medley relay team finish seventh at the NCAA Indoor Track Championship last week, earning the same All-American honors Hargrove’s team had won.

Mo’ Madness

All right, admit it. There was a point in this magical mystery ride of a basketball season when you thought your heralded Hoyas might not even make the NCAA Tournament. After losses to Oregon and Old Dominion, those who bled blue and gray were feeling blue and sporting some grayish facial hue wondering if the Sports Illustrated jinx had struck again. At that time, the Hoyas were about as likely to make a tourney run as Britney Spears is likely to do a shampoo ad any time in the near future.

Lady Hoyas hold off Hopkins

The Georgetown women’s lacrosse team continued its winning ways Wednesday afternoon with a 16-13 victory over area rival and 12th-ranked Johns Hopkins. Relying on a trio of senior attackers—Brittany Baschuck, Schuyler Sutton and Coco Stanwick—Georgetown built a 8-4 halftime lead that they never relinquished.

Lights out for the Lady Hoyas

Monday was a sad night for the Lady Hoyas as they fell to Pittsburgh 68-58 in their final game of the season. Coming off a win on the road against Providence, the Hoyas hoped to make the Big East tournament with a win against Pitt. But the poor shooting that characterized their season prevented the Lady Hoyas from making a second-half run, and left them without a post-season berth.

New and improved GU cycling

The riders of the Georgetown University Cycling Team took to the roads of Williamsburg, Va. last weekend in their first-ever team competition. The team’s maiden race was a success, as the Hoyas rode through sleet and freezing rain to finish second of 10 Division II cycling teams in the Atlantic Coast Collegiate Cycling opener.

Hoyas drop a heartbreaker

Hoya baseball (2-4) was riding a two-game winning streak going into yesterday’s game against Navy (9-2). The team got another very solid pitching performance from Jimmy Saris, but their bats let down the sophomore righty as the Hoyas dropped the close game 2-1.

The real muscle of the Hoyas

It’s 7:30 on a Tuesday morning, and while most Georgetown students are still snuggled in their beds, the football team has already been training for an hour and a half. The varsity weight room at Yates is a sea of blue-and gray athletic attire, each of the 80 players sporting a unique combination of standard-issue gear for his own look. Players grunt in encouragement and pain, a sound that combines with the nearly-constant dropping of heavy iron to create an organic soundtrack—pure manmusic.

Most archaic customs as brutal as gladitorial combat have long since vanished, contained now only within the pages of history books. With the Nova Nation looming at my back last Saturday, I happily played the unbiased journalist in the press box and hid my Georgetown T-shirt under a neutral sweater. Down by double digits early and grossly outnumbered, I wasn’t about to be a hero. But as Jesse Sapp let fly from 60 feet at the first-half buzzer and found nothing but net, I leapt out of my seat without thinking and exposed my allegiance to the hundreds of Wildcats behind me.

Hoyas win despite sloppy play

With a match-up against Pittsburgh for Big East supremacy only days away, the Hoyas may have been guilty of looking ahead as they struggled against last-place Cincinnati last night. Despite early struggles, Georgetown rallied and extended their winning streak to ten with a 75-65 win.
