Football set for stiff road test

Georgetown’s matchup against Marist to close the 2010 football season hardly gave then-freshman tailback Nick Campanella cause for celebration. Despite their 14-7 win over the Red Foxes, the Hoyas had just wrapped up a dismal slide that saw them finish 4-7 overall, while Campanella failed to see any action in the game outside of special teams.

Sports Sermon: NBA season fading into distance

NBA commissioner David Stern has officially completed his transformation from global visionary to dictator. Almost a month after harmlessly discussing revenue sharing and mentioning the name of the Milwaukee Bucks Australian center Andrew Bogut in an interview with Australian daily The Herald Sun, the NBA fined Michael Jordan the ludicrous sum of $100,000.

Sports

Volleyball grounded early

The Georgetown’s women’s volleyball team has started out the season with mixed results, dropping to 4-5 after a tough five-set loss to George Washington in the final game of the D.C. Challenge yesterday afternoon. The Hoyas will rue their missed chances against the Colonials, having surged to a two sets to one lead in the match.

Double Teamed: Wild weekend in unlocked NFL

Nothing has been normal in the NFL since Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers claimed the Super Bowl crown last February. In a summer when ESPN’s legal analyst, Roger Cossack got more air time than Ron Jaworski, teams missed out on critical time preparing for the upcoming season. Yet after the lockout was finally settled, all seemed right in the universe. Yes, players were rushed into preseason games and forced to bury their heads in playbooks. But a season was on the horizon, fantasy football was back, and the greatest American Sunday tradition was saved.

Women’s soccer back on track

With its third straight win, the Georgetown women’s soccer team continued its revival from a brief early season swoon. After Friday’s 2-0 triumph over James Madison and Sunday’s 1-0 win against St. Francis, the Hoyas stand at an impressive 6-2 and are in prime position to begin conference play.

Hoyas roll, dismantle Davidson in opener

This season, it’s all about experience for the Georgetown football team. After defeating Davidson by a score of 20-10 in North Carolina last season, the team tore the Wildcats apart in a 40-16 showcase at Multi-Sport Field last Saturday.

Sports Sermon: NFL unlocked

Forget about nauseating questions of revenue sharing and salary scales—it’s finally time to ask yourself every offseason’s most important question: “Are you ready for some football?”

Doubled Teamed: The value of Verlander

What does it mean to be “most valuable?” When it comes to MVP awards in sports, no one seems to know. Perhaps that is why Major League Baseball American League MVP race is as deep, varied, and uncertain as it has ever been in recent memory.

Soccer overcomes Stanford

One week after the Georgetown women’s soccer team was handily defeated 4-1 by Stanford, the men’s team entered Sunday’s game against the Cardinal with revenge in mind. After a stagnant regulation period, the Hoyas picked up the energy level and took advantage of Stanford’s lethargy when sophomore Steve Neumann scored in the 105th minute to give Georgetown the 1-0 victory in double overtime.

Experience on D gives Hoyas hope in new season

After hitting rock-bottom with an 0-11 record in 2009, the Hoyas bounced back with an inspired start to 2010, despite faltering in the final weeks. But captain Wayne Heimuli is not taking any breaks to pat himself on the back for last season’s improvements, knowing the Hoyas have the potential to take yet another step forward this term.

Sports Sermon

Despite their youth and inexperience, no one can argue that the Georgetown men’s basketball team’s not battle-tested. After four successive seasons of underachievement and national embarrassment, the Hoyas made international headlines last week when an exhibition match against the Bayi Rockets, part of Georgetown’s 10-day “goodwill tour” of China, turned into full-scale, bench-clearing brawl.

Sports

Hoyas poised for marquee matchup

At the start of their season, the Georgetown women’s soccer team has the ball rolling in the right direction. Notching two convincing wins in their first two games, the Hoyas aren’t messing around. They dominated their two district matches against George Washington and American, scoring early and shutting out their opponents.

Double Teamed: D.C., a capital for sports?

Washington D.C. is one of the best places in the country for a sports fan. It is one of only twelve cities in the United States that is home to a pro sports team in each of the four major sports. Even if our nation’s capital hasn’t seen a championship since Joe Gibbs’s Redskins in 1991, the Capitals, Wizards, Nationals, and Redskins provide a lot of buzz in the city, year round. But the city’s sports scene runs much deeper than its four major teams, boasting numerous amateur and charity events with world-class talent.

Men’s soccer on the rise

For many teams, being picked to finish fourth in one of the best conferences in the nation would be a source of pride. However, Ian Christianson, junior midfielder for the Georgetown men’s soccer team, feels the prediction was anything but a compliment.

Comeau coming up big in his sophomore season

Standing just five feet, eight inches tall, Travis Comeau does not look like your stereotypical, hulking Division I lacrosse player. The sophomore attack does not act like a typical lacrosse star either, remaining humble while displaying his friendly and polite demeanor.

The Sports Sermon: Come back Hollis

Last year, stunningly talented center Greg Monroe shattered the blue and gray hearts of Georgetown fans when he opted to leave for the NBA after his sophomore season. The talent drain potentially hit the Hilltop again last week, when emerging swingman Hollis Thompson declared for the draft after just two seasons with the Hoyas.
