Soccer overcomes Stanford

One week after the Georgetown women’s soccer team was handily defeated 4-1 by Stanford, the men’s team entered Sunday’s game against the Cardinal with revenge in mind. After a stagnant regulation period, the Hoyas picked up the energy level and took advantage of Stanford’s lethargy when sophomore Steve Neumann scored in the 105th minute to give Georgetown the 1-0 victory in double overtime.

Experience on D gives Hoyas hope in new season

After hitting rock-bottom with an 0-11 record in 2009, the Hoyas bounced back with an inspired start to 2010, despite faltering in the final weeks. Washington D.C. is one of the best places in the country for a sports fan. It is one of only twelve cities in the United States that is home to a pro sports team in each of the four major sports. Even if our nation’s capital hasn’t seen a championship since Joe Gibbs’s Redskins in 1991, the Capitals, Wizards, Nationals, and Redskins provide a lot of buzz in the city, year round. But the city’s sports scene runs much deeper than its four major teams, boasting numerous amateur and charity events with world-class talent.

For the Georgetown women’s lacrosse team, winning has been a frequent and comfortable achievement recently. After getting off to a 2-5 start, the No. 16 Hoyas broke off a six-game winning streak, which improved their record to 8-5 overall with an unblemished 6-0 record in the Big East.

The Georgetown baseball team (19-24, 2-13 Big East) continued a disappointing stretch by dropping their fourth straight game, losing 11-3 to George Mason on Tuesday. An impressive long-relief outing from Bobby Kirby proved to be in vain, as the team was unable to rally back from an early five-run deficit.

Baseball freefalling in Big East

After a promising start to the season, the Georgetown baseball team (18-7, 1-8 Big East) has struggled in conference play. Most recently, a sweep by West Virginia over the weekend has pushed the Hoyas to the bottom of the Big East standings. The Hoyas have lost eight of their last nine games after a 9-2 stretch.

Mired in a season-long slump, the Georgetown women’s softball team (9-28, 3-2 Big East) decided to forget about the past and focus on the Big East grind that awaited them. That philosophy paid dividends two weekends ago when they started on a run through the conference against Connecticut.
