If you were to ask NBA fans or coaches, most would have told you that the 2010 NBA Draft had one prize. Sure, there were 60 selections total, but after the season, lottery teams had their eye on one just player—John Wall. This hasn’t always been the case though with the first overall pick.

Hoyas shut down Big East elite

When the Georgetown women’s basketball team suffered a crushing 80-58 loss to Notre Dame on Jan. 18, head coach Terri Williams-Flournoy called it a great wake-up call. The team certainly heard that call with a win against Villanova last Saturday, followed by an even more impressive win against West Virginia.

With the fall season long over, the Georgetown men’s and women’s tennis teams are eagerly anticipating their upcoming season. During the past few months, head coach Gordie Ernst has had both the men and women play in tournaments to prepare for the main part of the schedule and improve their results after last year.

Fighting Irish deliver Hoyas a crushing blow

The Georgetown women’s basketball team (14-5, 2-3 Big East) got to South Bend expecting a tough fight against No. 11 Notre Dame (16-4, 5-1 Big East) on Tuesday night, and the Fighting Irish gave them more then they could handle. The No. 16 Hoyas fell for the second time in three games, this time in convincing fashion: 80-58.

The Sports Sermon: Just win, baby

A win is a win. It’s as simple as that. After having a near-heart attack while watching the Hoyas eke out a win Tuesday night against Seton Hall—which is now a weekly occurrence—I realized that although the team played poorly for much of the game, I was happy with the result. Sure, Seton Hall isn’t the cream of the Big East crop. But it doesn’t matter.

Swimming downs American

The Georgetown men’s and women’s swim teams made a splash in their return to competition, with both beating American University in their first meet of the semester. However, the women’s squad also lost to James Madison University. The Hoyas posted strong times, and two more women qualified for the Big East Championship in February.

Hoyas can’t stop the bleeding against Panthers

The No. 19 Georgetown Hoyas took another step backwards against No. 5 Pittsburgh on Wednesday night, moving to a disappointing 1-4 in conference play after getting throttled 72-57. Hoping to put an end to their slump against one of the best teams in the country, the Hoyas only found themselves one game further away from where they needed to be, as head coach John Thompson III put it after the game.

Georgetown’s Big Three don’t appear to have much for the Big East. The No. 13 Hoyas (12-3, 1-2 Big East) dropped their second game in six days as the trio of Austin Freeman, Chris Wright, and Jason Clark were limited to 20 combined points.

With three years experience and countless 20-point (or more) games under his belt, no team was going to be surprised if Chris Wright beat them this season. On Sunday, however, Wright once again showed an opponent that he is now able to make his teammates do it for him.

Coming into this season, the No. 9 Georgetown Hoyas (8-0) had a gaping hole to fill in the frontcourt. Fortunately, there were a couple of talented freshmen who were expected to shore up their depth down low. Hoya fans could be forgiven for mistaking Henry Sims for one of those newcomers.

Senior and two-time All-American Chris Kinney began his last season on the Hilltop hot off the blocks, winning the men’s 60-meter hurdles at the Navy Invitational on Dec. 5. “Being the first race of the year, I was naturally excited,” Kinney said. “Up until the gun, my entire focus was just to race.”

Backdoor Cuts: FIFA red-cards America

FIFA President Sepp Blatter’s announcement that the 2022 World Cup would be hosted by Qatar was a slap in the face to American soccer fans. The United States was prepared to cement its place as a legitimate soccer power with its 2022 Cup bid, which by all accounts was without any major deficiencies.

Dream run ends for Hoyas

“Every team but one loses their last game,” Georgetown women’s soccer coach Dave Nolan said. Unfortunately, this year, the Hoyas couldn’t be that one team. Last Friday the Georgetown women’s soccer team’s dream season came to an end when the squad fell to No. 12 Ohio State 2-0 in Columbus, Ohio.
