Volleyball grounded early

The Georgetown’s women’s volleyball team has started out the season with mixed results, dropping to 4-5 after a tough five-set loss to George Washington in the final game of the D.C. Challenge yesterday afternoon. The Hoyas will rue their missed chances against the Colonials, having surged to a two sets to one lead in the match.

Double Teamed: Wild weekend in unlocked NFL

Nothing has been normal in the NFL since Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers claimed the Super Bowl crown last February. In a summer when ESPN’s legal analyst, Roger Cossack got more air time than Ron Jaworski, teams missed out on critical time preparing for the upcoming season. Yet after the lockout was finally settled, all seemed right in the universe. Yes, players were rushed into preseason games and forced to bury their heads in playbooks. But a season was on the horizon, fantasy football was back, and the greatest American Sunday tradition was saved.

Women’s soccer back on track

With its third straight win, the Georgetown women’s soccer team continued its revival from a brief early season swoon. After Friday’s 2-0 triumph over James Madison and Sunday’s 1-0 win against St. Francis, the Hoyas stand at an impressive 6-2 and are in prime position to begin conference play.

Hoyas roll, dismantle Davidson in opener

This season, it’s all about experience for the Georgetown football team. After defeating Davidson by a score of 20-10 in North Carolina last season, the team tore the Wildcats apart in a 40-16 showcase at Multi-Sport Field last Saturday.

Soccer overcomes Stanford

One week after the Georgetown women’s soccer team was handily defeated 4-1 by Stanford, the men’s team entered Sunday’s game against the Cardinal with revenge in mind. After a stagnant regulation period, the Hoyas picked up the energy level and took advantage of Stanford’s lethargy when sophomore Steve Neumann scored in the 105th minute to give Georgetown the 1-0 victory in double overtime.

After hitting rock-bottom with an 0-11 record in 2009, the Hoyas bounced back with an inspired start to 2010, despite faltering in the final weeks. But captain Wayne Heimuli is not taking any breaks to pat himself on the back for last season’s improvements, knowing the Hoyas have the potential to take yet another step forward this term.

After four successive seasons of underachievement and national embarrassment, the Hoyas made international headlines last week when an exhibition match against the Bayi Rockets, part of Georgetown’s 10-day “goodwill tour” of China, turned into full-scale, bench-clearing brawl.

Washington D.C. is one of the best places in the country for a sports fan. It is one of only twelve cities in the United States that is home to a pro sports team in each of the four major sports. Even if our nation’s capital hasn’t seen a championship since Joe Gibbs’s Redskins in 1991, the Capitals, Wizards, Nationals, and Redskins provide a lot of buzz in the city, year round. But the city’s sports scene runs much deeper than its four major teams, boasting numerous amateur and charity events with world-class talent.

The talent drain potentially hit the Hilltop again last week, when emerging swingman Hollis Thompson declared for the draft after just two seasons with the Hoyas.

For the Georgetown women’s lacrosse team, winning has been a frequent and comfortable achievement recently. After getting off to a 2-5 start, the No. 16 Hoyas broke off a six-game winning streak, which improved their record to 8-5 overall with an unblemished 6-0 record in the Big East.

The Georgetown baseball team (19-24, 2-13 Big East) continued a disappointing stretch by dropping their fourth straight game, losing 11-3 to George Mason on Tuesday. An impressive long-relief outing from Bobby Kirby proved to be in vain, as the team was unable to rally back from an early five-run deficit.

Wins and losses are certainly important, but what truly matters is that the values, principles, and integrity of the university are upheld. At least that’s what they say.
